All the slips of paper are different. The one with the dead man's name on it has 4 of its edges crooked/rough. The other 4 has only 1 rough edge and the other edges are smooth.
After the writing is over you just feel the 4 rough edges of the slip and pick it out!

As an alternative, you can also perform this trick as dark magic where the spirits help you to find the dead person.

you should tell them to write someones name thats dead but was real close to them and that would realy bring emotion and the other world into it good job just need a little practice on tweaking it

Haven't tried it, but if you were to do something along the lines of taking pocket knife and scraping it along the edges it would be indiscoverable.
